JK Rowling told fans attending a global event for Warner Bros’ Fantastic Beats And Where To Find Them that the upcoming movie starring Eddie Redmayne will be the first of five total movies in the series spinoff of her Harry Potter stories. That’s new news as the author originally considered the spinoff idea to be a trilogy of films.

In addition, director David Yates, beamed into via satellite to the TCL Chinese Theatre from London with Rowling and Harry Potter film series producer David Heyman, also teased that the second movie in the follow-up series will be set in another global capital city — though he wouldn’t say which one. Another tease: he said the first Fantastic Beasts will feature a cameo by a young Albus Dumbledore as well as another character from the original Harry Potter movies, Gellert Grindelwald. A dangerous wizard whose friendship and later enmity with Dumbledore plays a large role in the parent series’ backstory, Grindelwald was also tied to the final Harry Potter book’s magical Macguffins the Deathly Hallows and to the eventual fate of Lord Voldemort.

The news comes ahead of the global bow of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them on November 18. The studio has already staked out a sequel release date for November 16, 2018.

The global event was beamed out to Hollywood, New York, London, Mexico City, Sao Paulo and Rome. Warner Bros showed the first 10 minutes of the movie as well as a featurette, and Jon Voight and Colin Farrell were in attendance in Hollywood. In London, Rowling, Yates and Heyman were joined by co-stars Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, and Dan Fogler.

Frill-necked bears, gryphons, an extremely covetous mole and dozens of other critters are causing havoc in Manhattan in the latest trailer for Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Luckily for the residents of 1926 New York, a mussy-haired wizard named Newt Scamander is there to corral them. Played by recent Oscar-winner (and just about the last British thespian who hasn’t already been roped into a role in the Harry Potter universe) Eddie Redmayne, Newt’s mission is to get the beasties back in order.

His journey acquaints him with new friends Jacob Kowalski (“Hey, mister English guy, I think your egg is hatching!” shouts the American No-Maj, a stateside term for those incapable of practicing magic) and Tina Goldstein, an employee of the Magical Congress of the United States of America who joins Newt’s quest. In addition to Dan Fogler and Katherine Waterston, respectively, Colin Farrell also joins Redmayne in the ensemble as Percival Graves, a ruthless wizard dead-set on tracking down Newt.
The new trailer shows off more of the production’s flashy CGI creations than any previous spot, with wide-scale destruction leveling entire sections of old-timey New York. “Something is stalking our city, wreaking destruction and then disappearing without a trace,” Tina warns. It can’t remain a secret much longer.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them comes to theaters November 18th.

When given the task of selecting a wand for the role, the 34 year-old actor took the position very seriously, and was rather fussy when it came to getting it perfect.
‘I sort of assumed that I would have a wand sort of plopped in my hand, but the reality is that these amazing props designers come, and then you have really a quite intricate discussion with [director] David Yates about what qualities Newt has.’

Every Potter fans dream, no?

Eddie then decided that Newt was not a ‘Showy guy’, therefore the wand is fairly simple.

‘We decided to have the wand be made out of ashwood, and it has quite a few scratches and sort of burn marks – so that you could get the sense that he’s been traveling the world with it, and it’s got quite a history to it.’

He continued: ‘But for the handle, they were sort of talking about whether it should be horn or leather, and I didn’t like the idea of like animal products being used, given that he’s a zoologist. So in the end, they came up with this idea of sand shell… and it has a slightly mother-of-pearly feel.’
And if that wasn’t enough for the actor to win over your wizarding hearts, it seems his inner schoolboy was let loose, and he commented: ‘My inner 9-year-old was having a disco!’

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them follows magizoologist Newt Scamander’s adventures in New York City in the 1920s as he searches for magical creatures, whilst trying not to cause too much havoc on the way…

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will be hitting the cinemas in November.

It’s been five long years since the final Harry Potter movie, Deathly Hallows Part 2, hit theaters, but this year fans can experience a new part of this magical universe. Warner Bros. will release Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on November 16, with Harry Potter director David Yates returning to the helm, and J.K. Rowling making her screenwriting debut. This movie will kick off a new trilogy, and earlier today, director David Yates revealed new details about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2.

David Yates revealed earlier this month that J.K. Rowling had already finished the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2, and that she already has “ideas” for the third movie. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, David Yates teases that the story goes in a whole new direction. Here’s what he had to say below.
“We’ve seen the script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself. The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where we start out. The work is pouring out of her.”

Warner Bros. confirmed that Fantastic Beasts will be a trilogy way back in October 2014, with the studio setting tentative release dates in 2018 and 2020 for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3. Fantastic Beasts stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a textbook used at Hogwarts by Harry Potter and his classmates. The cast of this movie prequel also includes Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Jenn Murray, Colin Farrell, Carmen Ejogo, Jon Voight and Gemma Chan.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be part of Warner Bros.’ massive Hall H Comic-Con panel on Saturday, July 23 at 11:30 AM, s stay tuned for more details on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its upcoming sequel.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be the third major movie to premiere new footage at the MTV Movie Awards next week. Like Suicide Squad and Captain America: Civil War, the first film in J.K. Rowling’s new magical franchise will show a brand new preview on MTV and have it presented by its star.

MTV News broke on April 5 that Eddie Redmayne will present the clip, which will surely show more of him as ‘magizoologist’ Newt Scamander. In this offshoot of the Harry Potter universe, Scamander travels with a suitcase full of magical creatures to 1926 New York City, only to have his Fantastic Beasts run rampant through the American No-Maj/Muggle community.

There has only been one official teaser for the film so far, which wasn’t able to show any of Scamander’s beasts. Perhaps this preview will be different, now that director David Yates is closer to finishing his latest Rowling-based film. But since this is a movie with no Harry Potter characters, with American characters and actors and with Rowling herself as the screenwriter, this is unlike any film he’s done in Rowling’s world.

Redmayne is presenting the clip alone, although Newt has much more help in the film from characters played by Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler. Whether they are enough against the creatures on the loose is something audiences can only imagine at this point.

Fantastic Beasts isn’t a superhero movie like the other films premiering clips at the MTV Movie Awards. However, like so many comic book movies these days, this is setting up a whole new cinematic universe and series of films. In this case, it is only the beginning of a new trilogy from Rowling’s magical world, after the last Rowling franchise had close to three trilogies.

The MTV Movie Awards will show this latest teaser sometime after 8 p.m. est on April 10, although the Fantastic Beasts will be truly found in theaters on Nov. 18.

Eddie Redmayne was born to play magizoologist Newt Scamander in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” according to producer David Heyman.

”Eddie was our first choice,” Heyman told tv3. “He’s very good at playing characters that are out of step, as it were, and bringing to them a real heart and compassion. He has a desire to bring truth to every moment. He’s very charming and appealing to men and women alike. And he’s a timeless actor, so he fits perfectly into 1920s New York.”

The film, written by J.K. Rowling, follows Scamander, a Ministry of Magistry employee who accidently unleashes a briefcase full of magical creatures upon NYC in the roaring twenties. Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell and Ezra Miller also star.

”Newt is someone who can communicate better with his creatures than he does with people,” Heyman said of Redmayne’s character. “He’s a Brit who finds himself in the US and the American magical universe is different to the British one.”

Redmayne said shooting the film, which wrapped last month, was “a wonder.”

“It’s just unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of,” Redmayne said. “It’s like imagination taken to the extreme.”

Rowling was intimately involved with the production process. According to Heyman, ”We’d run concepts by her, she’d give her thoughts and we’d adjust accordingly. She certainly was aware of all the lead casting choices before we finalized them.”

Redmayne said he asked Rowling “800 questions” to prepare for the role.

“I met J.K. Rowling and what’s so amazing is that her imagination is so full and thorough — it’s so encyclopedic of her world,” he told

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” directed by David Yates, opens Nov. 18, 2016.
